Pros

  • Easy to use, simple setup.
  • Free features for basic browsing and unrestricted web access.
  • Customizable advanced features.

Cons

  • Limited customer support staffing.
  • Improved, but questionable past. Previous versions installed a root certificate and logged hardware IDs. Do your homework and verify security if this is a concern, but any and every VPN could change to include or remove such practices.

What is Cyberghost?

Cyberghost is a free Virtual Private Network (VPN) and proxy app available for android. It allows multiple free and paid premium options to enhance your privacy on the internet.

Advanced features for premium uses include the option to choose your VPN server, change adware and malware blocking settings, data compression, and other tools.

For free users, you can use an Unblock Basic Websites profile that helps users evade regional IP blocking and national-level internet censorship.

What is a VPN?

A Virtual Private Network--as the name suggests--is a private connection as opposed to the public internet at large.

When you use the internet, your connection can be seen by anyone who has access to the system. This means your ISP, the websites you visit, and anyone listening in/tapping on your connection.

The internet isn't private, and isn't intended to be. Like the old "information superhighway" term used for the internet, it's a public road of data. Anyone who cares to look can see where you're going and doing.

That is, unless you take certain precautions.

When you use a VPN, your connection goes into a tunnel that hides your destination and actions to an extent. Inside that virtual network, it's a lot harder to look at what you're doing.

What do people see when you're using a VPN? Anyone watching your connection will simply see that you enter a server that could be used as a VPN. It would take a lot of research to figure out the right set of servers and the VPN provider.

Finding your VPN doesn't do much. VPN companies are their own entities that have privacy needs just like you, and they don't want people snooping in on their systems.

Decent VPNs will have systems so encrypted that they can't easily look at what their customers are doing. Nothing is impossible, but for most people who just want to cut down on ads or get around regional IP blocks for Netflix, it's no big deal.

What is a Proxy?

A proxy is like a lite version of a VPN. In fact, many VPN services use proxies as part of their privacy package.

A proxy by any definition is something that represents something else. A proxy server represents your connection to the rest of the internet.

When you connect to a proxy server, any site will see your connection as that server. If you want to visit a site that only allows Japanese connections, use a Japanese server. Want US-only or UK-only streaming? Use a UK or US stream.
